This blog recaps a recent interview published in FundFire by Nate DiCamillo | April 30, 2025

MyVest CEO, Anton Honikman, spoke with Nate DiCamillo of FundFire at Money Management Institute’s 2024 Annual Conference about his insights on model-based direct indexing and increased demand for specialized models within portfolios.

“There is still interest in direct indexing in equity model portfolios. I think what’s happening there is a slow evolution away from the traditional SMA for direct indexing towards more of a model-based approach to direct indexing, which allows for more customization for an individual client.”

Anton observes that while direct indexing in equity portfolios remains in demand, the industry is moving toward a model-based implementation. This shift allows for greater client-level customization without relying on traditional SMAs. He also highlighted increased interest in taxable fixed income models, driven by the current rate environment. But he emphasized that this isn’t just a short-term response, it’s part of a broader shift toward multi-asset model portfolios.

He also spoke to the needs of Rep-as-PM advisors, who often look to model portfolios for support in asset classes outside their core expertise. Specialized models in areas like alternatives or taxable fixed income help these advisors offer more comprehensive solutions while maintaining control. As firms refine their platforms, these types of models offer a practical path to personalization at scale.
